Code of Conduct for Managers and Coaches

Managers and Coaches are influential tutors of players. It follows that they are key to establishing desirable ethics for the players under their supervision.

Coaches and Managers are therefore expected to pay due regard to the moral aspect in the manner that they conduct themselves in all their personal actions.

Soccer is a competitive game and whilst we will always play to win, we will do so at all times within the rules and spirit of the game. To ‘win at all costs’ will never be an option if it involves unsporting behaviour.

The Coaches and Managers involved with young people have increased responsibility. The first priority must always be the young players’ health, safety, welfare and their moral education.

The teaching of skills and providing a sense of achievement for the individual team or club, will always be in the above context.

The following is our code of conduct which conforms to the FA Coaches Association requirement.

1.     Managers and Coaches must at all times respect the rights, dignity and worth of the individual treating each person equally within the context of the sport.

2.     Whilst striving to develop the performance of individuals this will always be done placing the safety and well-being of each player above all other considerations.

3.     The guidelines laid down by the governing bodies will always be adhered to.

4.     It will be a key objective to develop an appropriate working relationship with each player with the emphasis on mutual trust and respect.

5.     Players will be encouraged and coached to accept responsibility for their own behaviour and performance.

6.     They will always be aware that the activities they direct or advocate are appropriate for the age, maturity, experience and ability of the players.

7.     At the outset the Manager or Coach will clarify exactly what is expected from each player and what the player is entitled to expect from them. (This expectation will be made known to the parent where appropriate).

8.     Coaches will communicate and co-operate fully with other specialists such as doctors, physiotherapists, sports scientists and other coaches or officials.

9.     The spirit of the game will always be promoted positively and violations of the laws will never be condoned nor will the use of prohibited substances or techniques.

10.   Managers and Coaches will always be aware of the influence they have by displaying consistently high standards of behaviour and appearance.

11.   Coaches and Managers will not use or tolerate inappropriate language especially where they have responsibility for younger players.
